Is it for me? Open Day

On Tuesday 2nd October between 10am-1pm we are hosting an 'Is it for me?' event! This is part of the Silver Sunday fortnight of events planned in Salisbury! See the whole timetable of events here. This will be taking place at our Fisherton House site, Fountain Way, Salisbury SP2 7FD. 

This event is open to the whole community, for people to find out more about the local support and activites availbale to them. Free tea, coffee and homemade cakes will be served and there will be plenty of spaces to sit and chat with friends or meet new people.

A national charity, offering support and advice to people living with dementia and their families. Their side by side service helps people get out and about with the support of a volunteer doing an activity of their choice. This might be anything from joining a local club, to going to the football, a cafe or simply a stroll in the park.

Their services include day clubs and one-to-one home support. Community activities include Music for the Mind, Movement for the Mind, memory cafes, art groups, a discussion group, wildlife club and many more - all designed to keep minds and bodies active and reduce isolation. They also offer services to support family carers, including monthly carers' groups and twice-yearly training courses.  Dementia Advisers will come and see you at home, or in your GP surgery if you prefer, and discuss your situation and the kind of help that is available now and in the future.

“A carer is anyone who cares, unpaid, for a family member or friend who could not always manage without their support. They might look after someone with a physical disability, long term health condition, mental health issue or a problem with substance misuse.”

The charity provide a range of support and information services including support groups, carers cafés, free courses to help you in your caring role, complementary pampering sessions and signposting to further support.

Their service is aimed primarily at those with mobility issues or needs that cannot reasonably be met by public transport options.  Their main aim is to alleviate social isolation and thereby enable customers to enjoy a fuller life.  A simple volunteer car service is offered to take customers to any destination as well as a busy 'Shopper' bus service using accessible minibuses, organised 'Trips & Days Out' and minibus 'Driver & Self Hire'.

Their services are available to adults over 18 years, with a confirmed diagnosis of a brain injury. Brain injury has many causes but some of the most common are head injury, stroke, brain tumour, and illnesses like meningitis. Services include activity groups, occupational advice, peer support groups, family support groups and young adults support groups.

Health Trainers

Health Trainers work on a one to one basis to support behaviour change and improve health. They concentrate on behaviours associated with ill health including unhealthy eating often linked to obesity, stop or reduce smoking, sensible drinking, increasing physical activity, building confidence and motivation to change and boosting self-esteem, they also signpost and support clients to access other services and activities where appropriate.

Shopmobility is a scheme that enables people with temporary or permanent mobility difficulties to get about in Salisbury city centre and shop independently.

Members of the scheme can hire vehicles and walking aids that allow them to access the shops and facilities that Salisbury offers. The city centre provides good access for wheelchair users and those with walking difficulties, with numerous dropped kerbs, regular crossing points and widened pavements.

This means they are accessible to older people, people who thought they could never play again due to injury, age or medical condition or people that have never played before but would like to start something social, fun and enjoyable.

Wiltshire Bobbyvan Trust

The Wiltshire Bobby Van Trust (WBVT) works in partnership with the Wiltshire Police to provide a home security service for older and vulnerable people throughout Wiltshire. The charity funds the operation of three Bobby vans that provide mobile workshops for Bobby operators. Their new team of Stay Safe Online Volunteers also offer advice on keeping safe online.

Wiltshire ‘Improving Access to Psychological Therapy’ offers a wide range of support from psycho-educational courses to one-to-one intervention. This service is available to anyone registered with a GP practice within Wiltshire, but outside of Swindon.
